In Europe, out of a total population of 466 million, around 127 million people suffer from a disease of the nervous system. Worldwide, neuropsychiatric disorders are the most common cause of physical and mental disability and the second most common cause of death. The Comprehensive Center for Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health of University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna focuses on these disorders and brings together the diverse expertise of the various university hospitals and departments of MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna. The new center was presented at a launch event at the Josephnium on 16 January 2024.
The increasing number of neurological and mental illnesses poses challenges for medical care and training in the healthcare sector. Advances in diagnosis and treatment are also increasing the demands on staff. To meet these challenges, University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna have founded the Comprehensive Center for Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health. Eight institutions (Department of Neurology, Division of Neuropathology and Neurochemistry, Department of Neurosurgery, Division of General Psychiatry, Division of Social Psychiatry, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Department of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and Division of Neuroradiology and Musculoskeletal Radiology) work closely together at the new center, to advance medical care, research and education in the field of clinical neuroscience and mental health and to use state-of-the-art technologies for diagnosis, treatment and prevention for patients of all ages, from children to adults.
The center strategy of University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna
The establishment of Comprehensive Centers is an important joint strategic goal of University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna. Aimed at providing the best possible, personalized care for patients with a specific range of diseases, the centers will further develop cooperation between various Departments and Divisions across disciplines and professional groups in a structured manner. The Comprehensive Centers are united by the core task of working together to link therapy, teaching and research even more closely across the individual disciplines in order to offer patients the best possible treatment. Ten Comprehensive Centers have been established at University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna to date.
The Comprehensive Center for Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health has started its work and to mark the occasion, the institutions involved in the center hosted a launch event on 16 January 2024. The joint strategies for the further development of university research, teaching and patient care in the field of neurological and mental illnesses as well as the flagship project on digitalization were presented.
