MedUni Vienna: The Long Night of Research focuses on the "Future of Medicine"

Live heart valve surgery in the Lecture Center – further highlights at more than 60 stations: precision medicine and bionic reconstruction

Precision medicine – also known as “personalised medicine" – is the major trend in present-day and future medicine. Precision medicine is based on modern diagnostic techniques, such as genome sequencing and molecular imaging. It will allow patients to be treated in an even more targeted and individualised way in the future. Accordingly, a Center for Precision Medicine (zpm) is being built on the MedUni Campus from 2022 – a presentation about the zpm and its aims forms one of the highlights of the Long Night of Research being held at MedUni Vienna on Friday 13 April 2018 (17:00 - 23:00 hrs).

Other high spots of this exciting evening focusing on the future of medicine are: a heart operation streamed live from the new hybrid operating theatre into the Lecture Center of MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital (Level 8), the stations about bionic reconstruction, the Pollen Monitoring Service or plastic and reconstructive surgery performed using spider silk.

The Medical Research Mile at the Medical University of Vienna comprises a total of more than 60 interactive stations. As in 2014 and 2016, a heart operation will be streamed live from the new hybrid operating theatre into Lecture Rooms 1 and 2. The two live heart valve replacement surgeries will start at 17:00 and 20:30 hrs. This will be preceded by a virtual tour through the hybrid operating theatre. The surgical team from the Division of Cardiac Surgery will be hooked up live and will give a running commentary on the various steps of the operation. This will be accompanied by an explanation of significant details given by an expert team in the lecture room. Attendance is free – as indeed it is for all the other stations.

"Bionic reconstruction" is another highlight of this evening at MedUni Vienna. Experts will demonstrate at an interactive station how it is possible to move a prosthesis intuitively and simultaneously and will outline the underlying surgical and technical research and development (Lecture Center, 17:00 - 23:00 hrs). There will also be fascinating lectures and interactive stations on themes such as "Tracking down rare diseases", "What do superheroes and cancer have in common? – The secret of DNA" or "Fascinating immune system – a high-wire balancing act".

Medical Research Mile on 13 April 2018 (17:00 – 23:00 hrs)
The Long Night of Research compactly combines more than 60 stations along the "Medical Research Mile" in the 9th District of Vienna, at the following seven locations: MedUni Vienna Lecture Center in Vienna General Hospital (on Levels 7 and 8), St. Anna Children's Cancer Research (Zimmermannplatz 10), University Clinic of Dentistry Vienna (Sensengasse 2a),  Institute of Cancer Research (Borschkegasse 8A), Anna Spiegel Research Building, High-Field MR Center of Excellence (both on the MedUni Campus, Vienna General Hospital) and the Institute of Immunology (Lazarettgasse 19). And Manz Verlag publishers will have a stand where you can buy all the factual and medical books published in collaboration with MedUni Vienna – ranging from "Allergy and Pollen" to "Prostate Cancer", "Climate Change" and "Vaccination".
