On International Women's Day 2025, one of Europe's largest hospitals is making visible what the figures impressively prove: With a proportion of women of over 76 percent, the University Hospital Vienna (Universitätsklinikum AKH) relies on female expertise in all areas - from nursing to medicine to research. On the occasion of International Women's Day, at its figures the University Hospital Vienna took a look for 2020 and 2025 and can draw a positive balance: With over 76 percent of its workforce made up of women, University Hospital Vienna is three-quarters female, emphasizing the expertise and key role of women in system-relevant professions.employee

More female doctors and scientists employed at MedUni and AKH

Figures from MedUni Vienna show that the proportion of women has risen significantly, particularly in the medical and scientific fields. While almost every second doctor's post is now held by a woman, the proportion of women in scientific professions has (pharmacists, chemists, physicists) risen to an impressive 83%. This development underlines the fact that female specialists are not only essential for hospital operations, but are also increasingly gaining top positions.

AKH Director Herwig Wetzlinger emphasizes: "Women are the backbone of our hospital. Their commitment and expertise are essential for providing the best possible care for our patients. We are delighted about the continuous increase in the number of female specialists and will continue to work on creating optimal conditions for all our employees."

Markus Müller, Rector of MedUni Vienna, adds: "125 years ago, an important step was taken at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, now MedUni Vienna: for the first time, women were allowed to study medicine on a regular basis. Today, women play a key role in shaping the image of medicine. This development is thanks to the commitment and perseverance of many courageous women who continue to inspire and pave the way for future generations."

Women in nursing care: a stable pillar in the healthcare system

In nursing, where women are traditionally strongly represented, the proportion of women remains stable at around 81.5%. The importance of this profession has become particularly clear in recent years, emphasizing how indispensable primarily female nursing staff are for a functioning healthcare system.

At the same time, University Hospital Vienna that emphasizes men  beyond gender boundaries should also lookand consider professions that are traditionally considered female - such as nursing.
