AOP Health is the European pioneer in the field of rare diseases and intensive care and researches, develops and distributes innovative solutions worldwide. Going forward, the Vienna headquarters will also package some of its medicinal products: five for rare diseases and two for use in intensive care medicine. More flexibility for packaging small quantities
As Christoph Reinwald, AOP Health CTO , explains, "Having our own packaging facility in Vienna enables us, in cooperation with our partners, to respond even more quickly and efficiently to urgent needs on the pharmaceutical market and in patient care. At the same time, a new packaging facility in Vienna will strengthen Austria as a fast-growing location for pharmaceutical companies within Europe."
"The world's largest insulin manufacturer produces around 600 million ampoules or vials per year, while at AOP Health only 5,000 packs per year are needed for some therapies. AOP Health has always been concerned with niche indications in the field of rare and intensive care diseases. Production volumes are therefore small compared to mainstream pharmaceutical manufacturing. Nevertheless, we see it as our responsibility to ensure the supply for these often seriously ill patients. The launch of our own packaging facility in Vienna is therefore an important and right step in this direction," explains Reinwald. According to the expert, it is necessary, to bring manufacturing and packaging back to Europe in the interest of patients, to be able to guarantee supply in case of international supply chain disruptions.
Ten new jobs by the end of 2024
The packaging equipment not only contributes to supply security but also brings new jobs to the Vienna location. Ten new employees will be hired by the end of 2024 to make optimal use of the facility.
