Erbe Elektromedizin Wins Microsoft Intelligent Manufacturing Award 2026 in Partnership with Flinn for AI-Powered Evidence Platform

Erbe Elektromedizin GmbH, a leading German medical device manufacturer, has been awarded the Microsoft Intelligent Manufacturing Award (MIMA) 2026 in the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) category. The award recognizes the successful implementation of Flinn’s AI-powered literature evaluation solution, developed in collaboration with Erbe and deployed as part of the project EvidenceStream, to automate and transform clinical literature evaluation processes.

Selected from hundreds of applicants, Erbe and Flinn advanced to the final round of 15 companies and presented the solution during the final pitch session. The project stood out for its ability to combine regulatory rigor with cutting-edge AI to drive measurable operational impact.

Transforming Regulatory Intelligence with AI

EvidenceStream enables the automated extraction and structuring of clinical evidence from scientific literature, addressing one of the most time-intensive processes in medical device compliance.

Developed in partnership with Flinn, the platform applies intelligent screening and extraction agents to conduct systematic, comprehensive, and reproducible literature searches in full alignment with EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) requirements. The system is currently deployed across more than 60 device groups.

The results demonstrate significant efficiency gains:

  • Reduction of literature search time from 88 hours to 44 hours per workflow
  • Elimination of redundant data extraction across 13 internal departments
  • Processing of over 5,000 abstract screenings and 97 literature searches in its first year
  • Achieved an 8.7x return on investment, with full payback within 42 days

Importantly, these efficiency gains were realized without workforce reductions, allowing Erbe to reallocate resources toward higher-value scientific analysis and strategic decision-making.

A Partnership Built on Trust and Execution Speed

The collaboration between Erbe and Flinn combined deep regulatory expertise with advanced AI engineering, enabling rapid deployment from concept to production.

Prof. Dr. Markus Enderle, Chief Scientific & Medical Officer and Member of the Executive Board at Erbe Group, commented: “Flinn understood from day one that our goal was not automation for its own sake, but building a system our experts would trust. Their combination of AI engineering and our regulatory expertise and experience made EvidenceStream possible to come to life from contract to production in eight months. That speed, paired with measurable results, is why we see this as a long-term partnership.”

Prof. Dr. Nermin Salkic, Global Medical Director at Erbe Group, added: “We had a clear vision for EvidenceStream: AI should handle the repetitive work so our medical affairs team can focus on scientific judgment. Flinn brought the technical depth to make that real. The result is a platform that cut our literature search time in half while increasing output by over 50% with full audit readiness. Looking back, we made the perfect choice by choosing Flinn.”

Setting a New Standard for AI in MedTech

The Microsoft Intelligent Manufacturing Award highlights solutions that successfully bridge innovation and real-world industrial impact. With EvidenceStream, Erbe and Flinn demonstrate how AI can turn regulatory compliance from a cost center into a strategic advantage.

By combining automation with audit readiness and scientific integrity, the platform sets a new benchmark for how medical device manufacturers can scale regulatory processes in an increasingly complex environment.
