GMI: Botanic Quest – a smartphone based scavenger hunt for the Botanical Gardens

On May 23rd, the GMI, in collaboration with the Botanical Gardens of the University of Vienna and with financial support from the Vienna Business Agency, released Botanic Quest – a smartphone based scavenger hunt/quiz for exploring the Botanical Gardens, and, hopefully, learning how fascinating plants are in the process.

Botanic Quest was designed on the principle of „gamification “, the goal being to engage the public and students with plants and plant-based research.  The game is entirely web-based, and does not require the download of a separate app. Players receive a map of the Botanical Gardens which indicates the location of specific plants to find.  Upon finding the plants, which are marked with a QR code, players read a short text describing why the plant is interesting, and then receive one of several multiple-choice questions based on the text or the physical attributes of the plant itself (how does it look/feel/smell). Players are then awarded points based on how quickly the question is answered; the game keeps track of high-scores over a 7-day period, so players can see how they compete with their friends and classmates.

Botanic Quest was designed in collaboration with the Botanical Gardens of the University of Vienna by floorfour LifeScience PR and moonshiner/Florian Bauer with financial support from the Vienna Business Agency.
