The Presidium of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has elected Giulio Superti-Furga, Scientific Director of CeMM - Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences for a membership in recognition of scientific achievements and personal standing.
The Leopoldina is the oldest German-speaking society for medicine and natural sciences that can look back on an uninterrupted history. For more than 350 years it has adhered to the principles that were the basis of its formation: a free association of scholars, acting to advance human scientific development beyond the limits of subjects and countries.
Superti-Furga performed his undergraduate and graduate studies in molecular biology at the University of Zurich, at Genentech Inc. and at the Institute for Molecular Pathology in Vienna (I.M.P.). He has been a post-doctoral fellow and Team Leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) until 2004. For several years he has served as professor of Biotechnology at the University of Bologna. In 2000, he co-founded the biotech company Cellzome Inc., where he has been Scientific Director and responsible for the Heidelberg research site.
Giulio Superti-Furga started as director of CeMM in January 2005. His most significant scientific contributions are the elucidation of basic regulatory mechanisms of tyrosine kinases in human cancers and the discovery of fundamental organization principles of the proteome of higher organisms. Superti-Furga is a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and has been elected for a membership to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2005.
