Die Entscheidung wurde nach einer Plenarsitzung des Ausschusses für Risikobewertung im Bereich Pharmakovigilanz (PRAC) am 5. Mai 2025 getroffen und basiert auf Berichten über 17 SAEs weltweit (darunter zwei Todesfälle) bei älteren Personen mit erheblichen Vorerkrankungen und/oder Begleitmedikationen. Bis heute wurden weltweit über 40.000 Dosen IXCHIQ® verabreicht.
Darüber hinaus betonte die EMA, dass die genaue Ursache dieser schwerwiegenden unerwünschten Ereignisse und ihr Zusammenhang mit dem Impfstoff noch nicht geklärt sind, und erinnert medizinisches Fachpersonal daran, dass IXCHIQ® gemäß der Zusammenfassung der Merkmale des Arzneimittels (SmPC) nicht an Personen verabreicht werden darf, deren Immunsystem aufgrund einer Erkrankung oder medizinischer Behandlungen geschwächt ist. ®.
Valneva hatte zuvor über Änderungen der Empfehlungen für die Verwendung von IXCHIQ® in den USA[1] und Frankreich[2]. Am 16. April 2025 empfahl der Beratende Ausschuss für Immunisierungspraktiken (ACIP) der US-amerikanischen Zentren für Krankheitskontrolle und Prävention (CDC) eine Vorsichtsmaßnahme hinsichtlich der Verwendung des Chikungunya-Impfstoffs IXCHIQ® von Valneva bei Personen ab 65 Jahren.
Am 25. April 2025 hat die französische Gesundheitsbehörde Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) im Rahmen der Anfang April auf La Réunion gestarteten Impfkampagne, bei der Personen ab 65 Jahren mit Begleiterkrankungen[3]Vorrang eingeräumt wurde, ihre Empfehlung für die Verwendung des Impfstoffs in dieser Altersgruppe bis auf Weiteres ausgesetzt. Die Impfkampagne für Personen im Alter von 18 bis 64 Jahren wird fortgesetzt[4]

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne viral disease spread by the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes which causes fever, severe joint and muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash. Joint pain is often debilitating and can persist for weeks to years[5].
